There is no denying the importance that the trucking industry has on our economy today. In fact, the trucking industry plays a role in every other enterprise on the market these days. As important as it is, there are environmental concerns with this type of trucking and to the volume that the trucking industry is at currently. Changing trucking fleets to  less carbon emitting vehicles might be in the cards moving forward for the trucking industry.

Current Trucking Conditions

The trucking population accounts for only about 4% of vehicles on the road in the U.S., but creates just under half of the nitric oxide emissions produced overall. Unfortunately that statistic is not in favor of keeping this extensive trucking. Not only are there environmental issues present, but at the company level, keeping these fleets on the road is financially burdening. On top of this, fuel prices to keep these fleets going is about 25% of the total cost of trucking. So what does all this mean moving forward as technology is ever advancing?

What Is To Come In The Future

It is expected that the eclectic trucking industry will continue to grow in the upcoming years. Some EV models are now cheaper than diesel fuel trucks. Not only does this help trucking companies save money financially, but with the ever increasing governmental regulations around carbon emissions, trucking companies can reduce their emissions through the transition to electric powered vehicles. As this transition gradually happens, accommodations within the supply chain and customers who rely on transportation to receive shipments will have to occur. Due to a gradual introduction, there may be fewer trucks on the road thus leading to more of a supply demand.

Benefits Of EV Trucking

While there are many pros and cons to this new age of transportation, the good seems to outweigh the bad at this point. Studies have shown that EV trucks provide a safer option opposed to current gas and diesel trucks. Another benefit is through regenerative braking. When braking like this is used, the vehicle uses kinetic energy that is then recycled back into the vehicle to be used again as electric energy. This also helps with maintaining control while driving creating a safer driving experience for drivers. Less expenses and less pollutants is a win-win.

Through cuts to the carbon emissions allowance, it seems inevitable that electric vehicle tracking will be the next steps for trucking companies. While it will be a slow progression, trucking models available for purchase should double this year.
